Italian Language Facts
Italian is a Romance language spoken by about 60 million people in Italy and by a total of around 70 million in the world. In Switzerland, Italian is one of four official languages. It is also the official language of San Marino, as well as the primary language of Vatican City.
It is spoken principally in the Italian peninsula, southern Switzerland, San Marino, Sicily, Corsica, northern Sardinia, and on the north eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, as well as in North and South America. Considered a single language with numerous dialects, Italian, like the other Romance languages, is the direct offspring of the Latin spoken by the Romans and imposed by them on the peoples under their dominion. Of all the major Romance languages, Italian retains the closest resemblance to Latin.
Spoken in: Italy, Switzerland, San Marino, Vatican City, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Libya, Eritrea, Somalia, France (esp. Corsica), Greece (esp.Dodecanese) and among emigrants' communities and descendants in Canada, United States, Argentina, Australia, Uruguay, Venezuela, Brazil, Germany, France, Belgium, United Kingdom, Luxembourg and Monaco.
