Polish Language Facts
Polish is the official language of Poland. Its written standard is the Polish alphabet which corresponds basically to the Latin alphabet with a few additions. Polish-speakers use the language in a uniform manner through most of Poland.
It is a Slavic language and spoken primarily by people in the European nation of Poland. There are a concentration of speakers in the United States, Canada, and other nations such as the United Kingdom. However, almost all native Polish speakers still live in Poland, and more than 97 percent of that country's population is fluent in the language. Ethnic Poles constitute significant minorities in Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. Polish is the most widely used minority language in Lithuania's Vilnius County (26% of the population, according to the 2001 census results), and it is also present in other counties. It is estimated that between 40 and 48 million people worldwide speak Polish.
